Networking

We all have a network: Use yours
“All my friends and relatives know that I am looking for work.” Do they know precisely the type of job you are seeking?
Take the time to create a list of persons you would like to contact and do not be afraid to include: friends; acquaintances; former colleagues and employers; other persons with whom you shared classes, training or even hobbies; neighbours and even the corner store employee you see once a week. In other words, include anyone who might have job leads to offer or who could introduce you to persons within their network. Networking is an infinite process. Think of how Facebook works. It is said that each of us is only six degrees of separation from the Pope. But now, let us be serious.
Let your contacts know why you are looking for a job (you recently graduated or completed a training program, your previous contract expired or your company had to downsize, etc.). Tell them about the type of job that you are seeking, your experience and some of your skills, training and qualifications.
Tell your contacts why you are asking them for help and how you would like them to assist you: “You seem to know everyone… You work in my field. Do you know if any companies are hiring?”
Thank your contacts and agree on a way to follow up (very important): “I will call you next Thursday night. Have a nice week!”
Remember that people enjoy helping others. There is no cost, but a potentially great reward, to networking.

Good luck to you!
